AFI Top 100 - What Were Those Guys Thinking?

Thanks to Dede for alerting all to the new AFI Top 100 list.

Now that the ballots are in, what say we post up the five movies we thought should have been on the list and weren't and the five that were there and shouldn't have been? That should bring on some good discussion.

Here's mine, not in any particular order.

A. I Couldn't Believe They Left Out:

1. Fargo

2. Woodstock

3. Ball of Fire

4. Being There

5. Patton

B. How Could Anyone Have Voted For:

1. Toy Story

2. Rocky

3. Tootsie

4. Platoon

5. The Sixth Sense

Cheers,
Dan.

OK, Dan, here goes with my lists. I haven't seen about a third of the Top 100 (30 or so of those made before 1970), but will contribute, anyway, for what it's worth.

A. I Couldn't Believe They Left Out:

1. The Sting

2. Memento

3. Body Heat

4. A Christmas Story

5. Blood Simple

Most of my all-time favorites are probably not of the same caliber as typical "great" films. I just happen to love them, so I didn't list them here.

B. How Could Anyone Have Voted For:

1. Tootsie - too ridiculous

2. Forrest Gump - too dorky

3. E.T. - too cute

4. Citizen Kane - I didn't get it

5. 2001: A Space Odyssey - boring

I realize these are not popular choices to evict, but I thought they were all way overrated. Didn't care for "Apocalypse Now", either, but I can see why it's on the list.

As for your "left out" list, I've never heard of "Ball of Fire", and don't remember much about "Woodstock" or "Patton" but the other two are good choices.

I would totally have voted for all on your "unworthy" list except "Tootsie". "The Six Sense" is even in my Top 20. "Toy Story" was the first full length computer animated film, a box office smash, and entertaining to boot. "Rocky" was one of the best sports/love stories of all time (personally, I liked it better than "Raging Bull"). I don't remember much about "Platoon", except that it was fairly intense.

I'm sure I've created a few enemies here - hope I haven't offended anyone's sense of taste TOO badly!

Here is my two cents worth. Great topic by the way.

Like tototoo I have not seen all the movies on the Top 100 list but that won't keep me from sharing my opinion.

I Couldn't Believe They Left Out:

1. Arsenic and Old Lace

2. Brazil

3. The Color Purple

4. Dances with Wolves

5. Shakespeare in Love

6. Thelma & Louise

7. Crash

B. How Could Anyone Have Voted for:

1. Lawrence of Arabia - I did not get it

2. Annie Hall - You either love or hate Woody Allen's humor

3. Duck Soup - I tried to laugh but the Marx Brothers are just not funny to me.

It is funny how people who love the movies can have just different opinions about them. All the movies listed by tototoo as who-could-vote-for-these are some of my all time favorites. I humbly admit that I cry every time I watch them (well, with the exception of 2001 Space Odyssey.

Maybe the differences lie in whether the storyline connects with a viewer.
